Sottomarina
Sottomarina arose in the second half of the 18th century when, in order to defend the whole lagoon basin, the imposing work of the Murazzi was built – a protection made of large Istrian stone boulders laid there to tackle the destructive effect of the stormy seas. Since then, the situation has calmed down a great deal thanks to the sand coming from the River Brenta, about three metres per year, making it one of the deepest shores in Italy today. Not to be missed are the areas of architectural interest such as Piazza Todaro, the Murazzi, the Dam, the Fort of S. Felice, the old town centre with its narrow lanes and the shores of the Lusenzo lagoon.
